I am sure everyone must of heard the saying "Stop and smell the roses", This is where I feel enjoy the little things comes from.
Feeling the way PTSD makes us feel; sometimes finding joy is very difficult. To me Joy and happiness comes in small batches for everyone. This is something we need to grasp, no one can make us feel good inside if we feel horrible, we have to let the good feels happen, We have to find it first inside of us. Look out side and watch the weather change, watch how the seasons change everything outside. Now here in New England our weather changes moment by moment. I love that about here. Example; Yesterday it was 70 out and today it is snowing. I find once we start to find joy in something we can not control it becomes easier to find happiness with in our selves. Along with extending it to others. There is so many ideas to start to create a life of joy and good feelings. It is up to each other to find these things. We all may have the same symptoms but we are all different. All I can do is help others start in finding what this means to each them. Sometimes you may find it is difficult to even want to make the effort, this is where little things comes in handy. Something as small as a eating a Hershey kiss can bring us a small little piece of happiness. Then sharing one, can bring someone a smile. Then you smile. Let yourself enjoy these moments as small as they may be. Now lets be serious no one can just eat one of those yummy bites so do not feel guilty if you eat more then a few. We do not want that good feeling we have to turn to bad. So if you have no self control when it comes to food there is always something else.(who Really does) Lets look at other small things we can do, here is one, actually stop and smell the roses. Yes if you see flowers on a walk or in a store, stop and smell them. Or at least take a moment and look at them. Really pay attention to the flower and the texture. Now look at the stem and leaves. Amazing! Right!... Taking a few moments to pay attention to nature around you can go along way. Some people may say well nature is not my thing. I say try to enjoy it from a window or on a drive. Where the bugs can not creep you out. I have an example from my life. So a garden spider last year decided my bedroom window was a great place to set up house. This was uncomfortable to me but he made this amazing web. I felt and thought, well he is making this great effort at the begging of his short life, I should tolerate my feelings and see what happens. I have to say I found joy in my fear. I first investigated what kid of spider it was, just in case it could kill me. That is when I found it was a young garden spider. Then I found what it would grow into. This small kinda ugly spider would grow up to be this amazingly large garden spider. So yeah I had to let it live. I made a good choice. But yes he had to move to another part of the garden when he became his full size because it could of been a female, and as the weather changed I did not want it to make its way into my house. Everyday, many times I would sit and watch him, catch, store, eat and remake his web. This guaranteed me to have some joy. Strange as it may seem, it worked. I did share this time with friends and family which it did rub off on. Spreading the moments around to others brings back some to you. Again we are all different, so I will provide a list of a few things below and hopefully one will work for you. Be thank full for cloths Running water A bathroom(at one time there was none) Shady trees on a hot day A place to sit Nice pen Life Smiles Good funny Movie Breathing Christmas lights Tooth brushes Brushing teeth First bloom on a flower The trees leaves coming back Light snow Gentle rain(or thunder storm) Laughter of a child The smell after a rain storm The silence after heavy snow Hot cooked meal Favorite fruit Perfect warm day Chap stick pjs soft pillow bible I could go on and on, but I just hope you get the idea. There is a piece of joy in everything.

Through My healing process The one thing I can say is keep busy, find a hobby or something you enjoy to do or something you once enjoyed to do. It might be difficult at first but if you keep at it or change your task it will get better. The idea is to have something to go to when you have some free time. It may even be just a few minutes, but trust me it will help. One example I can think of is make up, now I am not one to wear it everyday but a little bit of eyeliner or even lip balm can go along way. Some may find they do have a hard time looking in a mirror, That is where lip balm or lip gloss come in handy. Something as small as taking care of your self as this does go a long way in the healing process. There is all kinds of flavored lip balms out there. I once found pumpkin spice, I love the smell of Thanksgiving so this worked for me. I would put it on before I would have to go into a store. So I would have a healthy aroma helping me get through the process of being in the crowd. Again I was taking care of myself, even this small action of healing is a good step. Make sure you acknowledge even lip balm as self care. Some other examples are:(some may not work for everyone) Yoga photography coloring go to a pet shelter and love up some cats, small animals, dogs ext. file your nails and pop on a color or even clear wash your floors clean the stove, sinks brush your hair a hundred times make miniatures sew crochet knit positive self talk make your bed everyday drawing painting re-arrange furniture take a class lotion your hands and feet oh do not forget elbows and knees splash you face with cold water in the morning make sure you keep the sink clean of dishes These can be used as small goals to reach for not just the idea of keeping busy. |
